Pavees Dance

Malcolm Mooney (original singer from CAN) Jamaaladeen Tacuma bass

Recording this summer we will be recoding the second Pavees Dance album with Alex Marcelo on keyboards

Genre:  Soulful Harmolodic Funk/Punk Jazz

In Pavees Dance, Noonan describes himself as an "Irish griot", one who collects tales, legends, and life stories over the course of his journeys and transforms them into raw material, not only from drumming, but in all of his music. Together with Aram Bajakian, his alter ego, and Jamaaladeen Tacuma, mutant bassist from Ornette Coleman's Primetime, they track down Malcolm Mooney, the original Can singer (back to "Monster Movie"). The latter remains famous for having been the shooting-star voice, half Soul, half psychedelic, of one of the more influential experimental Rock bands in History.

Pavees Dance was featured at Sons d'Hiver Festival

Jamaaladeen Tacuma perhaps best known for his albums as bandleader on the Gramavision label and for his work with Ornette Coleman during the 1970s and 1980s (particularly in Coleman's Prime Time band). Jamaaladeen's 1988 album Jukebox was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Aram Bajakian has performed/recorded with rock legend Lou Reed, Grammy winners Diana Krall and Yusef Lateef, saxophonist John Zorn.

Martin Longley (The Guardian, Jazzwise, All About Jazz) -

"Pavees Dance is an inspired collaboration between drummer Sean Noonan and original Can vocalist Malcolm Mooney, joined by former Ornette Coleman bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Lou Reed's final guitaring sidekick Aram Bajakian. Mooney's beat poetry harks back to pre-rap, his agile flow fittingly matched with Bajakian and Tacuma's kinetic guitar angularity. Noonan picks out elements of the free-flowing word-spew, underlining, echoing and melodicising with his own voice-lines. His drumming propels the pieces with a direct power that doesn't relinquish any rhythmic complexity. The post-Prime Time guitar/bass suspension marks its own time during the wordy outpourings. There's a frothingly committed verbal delivery on the part of both Mooney and Noonan, the music one moment extruding avant funk springiness, the next, spangling out towards psychedelic pop visions. "Moonwalk" presents a stuttering dub-poet rant, over an insistently pugilistic bassline, topped with a razoring guitar solo from Bajakian. Mooney's softly distorted refrain of 'she never cried', is central to "Portrait Of A Heartless Lover", turning from wistful to declamatory, as the song moves through multiple personalities, a Tacuma bass solo lighting the touchpaper for an immediately following Bajakian guitar flare."

Pascal Bussy,  CAN biographer -

“a musical journey full of poetry and magic, designed for the most curious ears and eyes."
